Memorial Day in Norman always feels like the unofficial beginning of summer — flags up, yards greening, grills going, and families gathering together after a busy spring season.

Before anything else, today is a day to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms and communities we sometimes take for granted every day. Whether you spend today quietly reflecting, attending a local event, or simply enjoying time with family at home, I hope it includes a moment of gratitude.

There is also something uniquely comforting about this particular weekend in Oklahoma. The pace shifts a little. School years end. Gardens begin to fill out. Patio furniture reappears. Neighbors wave a little longer from driveways and sidewalks.

You do not have to own the biggest house on the block to create a beautiful home experience.

Honestly, some of the most inviting homes are simply the ones that feel cared for and lived in well.

I also think this time of year reminds people why neighborhoods matter.

One of my favorite things about living and working in Norman is how connected many of our communities still feel. You see people out walking, biking, gardening, heading to the lake, gathering for cookouts, or stopping to chat at neighborhood entrances and parks. Those small everyday interactions are part of what turns a house into “home.”

As a Realtor, I get to see firsthand how emotional homes really are for people. Yes, buying and selling involves numbers, contracts, inspections, and logistics — but underneath all of that is usually a person or family imagining the kind of life they want to build next.
